You might remember this post about how the ruling BC Liberal party awarded huge pay hikes to senior staffers, at a time when most people in the province are trying make ends meet under the weight of the new carbon tax.
A new Angus Reid poll suggests that voters in BC have noticed that they are getting royally screwed, and for the first time in a long time the Liberal’s have lost their poll lead to the NDP.
According to the poll, 50% of BC residents opinion of Premier Campbell have worsened in the past two months. You will remember that the carbon tax was introduced July 1st, about two months ago. Coincidence? I think not. The poll also revealed that only 8% of voters in BC considered the environment the most important issue. So much for pandering to the global warming hoax.
BC has fixed election dates, the next time the government faces the electorate is May 2009. I anticipate a complete defeat for Premier Campbell and his wrecking crew, combined with a swift repeal of the carbon tax.
If a carbon tax cannot work on Canada’s enviro-friendly left coast, it is surely doomed in Ontario and the rest of the nation. Bad news if you happen to be heading into an federal election with a carbon tax as your central platform. Heh.

You are the only commentator that has made the link between implementation of the carbon tax and the precipitous fall in popularity of the Liberal government. It seems obvious to me that this is the major cause for dissatisfaction.
Although I tend to ignore polls, they are useful in one respect, they can signal dissatisfaction to the incumbent parties. Like you I think it would be disastrous for the Liberals to ignore this warning.
Closer examination of the poll is revealing and shows a deep distrust of Gordon Campbell generally in the range of 60% as it relates to honesty,confidence, understanding problems and issues related to the electorate. Personally, my faith in the man is zero, he has drunk the anthropomorphic global warming KoolAid and is about to embark on all manner of goofy “solutions” such as hydrogen vehicles, windmills, mandatory carbon trading for all public services (ie all schools, hospitals, universities and other public buildings must buy offsets for the energy use).
The carbon tax has immediately increased everybody’s domestic costs as transportation costs and heating costs increase and enterprises naturally pass these costs to the consumer. Our travel industry will be devastated as people cut back on travel, and American tourists stay at home.
Gordon Campbell’s ignorance of basic climate science (it is unpredictable and variable, as we witness each week when relying on weather forecasts) and willingness to adopt stupid policy means he should be removed by his party from the leadership if they wish to form the next government, his credibility is shot, his honesty is in question. Once these values are reversed they are rarely regained. Fire him now.

The worse news for BC is that the only party with enough support to beat the Liberals is the NDP, which makes me wonder about the frying pan into the fire metaphor.
If we see more polls like this one, it’s not beyond reason to expect Campbell to find a reason to repeal his idiotic tax. It wouldn’t save his government, but it might limit the electoral carnage.

I don’t think we are gonna see any reversal of the carbon tax, we have all received our $100 bribe to “offset” the effects of the tax in the first year. Campbell has too much invested in the idiocy.
Regards people transferring their vote to the dippers, that will happen and it may be disastrous. If I recall correctly there was a margin of something in the order of 12,000 votes in the last election that could have swung the result from majority Liberal to majority NDP, a motivated electorate could make that switch easily. I believe this poll shows people are motivated for a big change.
I believe the Liberals have miscalculated badly, it is too late to try and rehabilitate Campbell, the Liberals have to throw him overboard and sail under a new premier, only then can they say the carbon tax was wrong and reverse it. Nothing else will save them.
