Alarmism of the Year: Call for Nominations

For some year-end fun, I’ll be creating a poll for the most alarming alarmism uttered by an alarmist during 2009.

This is your chance to add your favorite hysterical statement to the list of nominations.

If you’re wondering just what sort of statement would qualify for the 1st Annual Alarming Alarmism Uttered by an Alarmist award, here are some examples:

“Now the planet has lung cancer, emphysema and asthma, among a lengthening list of respiratory problems. Soon we’ll be gasping for breath, like terminal smokers reaching for the oxygen tanks.” Phillip Adams.

and

“We estimate that 250,000 children could be killed by climate change next year” Benedict Dempsey, Save the Children

You get the idea. Nominations will close December 9th.

There are only three simple rules:

1. Post your nomination in the comments, complete with a valid link to the statement.

2. The alarmism must have been uttered this year (which means my favorite all time alarmism is not eligible.)

3. In the event that there are too many nominations, I reserve the right to pick the funniest ones.

UPDATE: Nominations are now closed, voting begins December 10th.

UPPERDATE: We have a winner!

  1. Clive Hamilton, Green’s candidate for Higgins and all ’round freak, explaining why climate denialists are actually worse than holocaust denialists, because:

“Instead of dishonouring the deaths of six million in the past, climate deniers risk the lives of hundreds of millions in the future. Holocaust deniers are not responsible for the Holocaust, but climate deniers, if they were to succeed, would share responsibility for the enormous suffering caused by global warming.”

P.S. If anyone who lives in the electorate of Higgins reads this - Its OK, you can vote for the Sex Party instead. Their candidate is a blonde, pole-dancing lawyer. Or you could vote Liberal.

  2. “It definitely is, and it’s a relatively new one. People think about geothermal energy — when they think about it at all — in terms of the hot water bubbling up in some places, but two kilometers or so down in most places ’cause the interior of the earth is extremely hot, several million degrees aces there are these incredibly hot rocks,… , and the crust of the earth is hot …”

  3. Oooooh…another beauty:

“The degree to which humanity has changed Gaia’s balance ecologically is clearly known by global change and ecological science, yet it is not well appreciated by most of the masses and ruling elite. Until it is, humanity and our sister species are careening towards global ecosystem collapse, where one day soon we will wake up on a toxic, largely lifeless planet and it will be too late.”

  4. Al Gore…the gift that keeps on giving:

-“Even a final treaty will have to set the stage for other tougher reductions at a later date,” he said. “We have already overshot the safe levels of CO2 in the atmosphere.”

He insisted that the present goal set for Copenhagen of stabilising world emissions of carbon dioxide at or below 450 parts per million — enough to prevent a rise in average global temperatures of no more than 2C — was insufficient and a safer target would be 350 parts per million.

“Are we doing enough? The answer is obviously no — 450 is not the right target. But it is presently seen as beyond the capacity of governments around the world. We are stretching the capacity of governments even to hit a 450 target.”

“We are gambling with the future of human civilisation in accepting odds that by any definition make our present course reckless . . . But it’s still the most likely path to success.”-

  5. “Our preference would be to get a shelter dog, but, obviously, a lot of shelter dogs are mutts like me.”
    Barack Obama

(On choosing a dog for his children as they go into the White House.)

No ice at North Pole coming winter…oh crap, that was last year.

Okay, that’s this year. It’s hard sorting out the stories by year.

It’s funny how nobody ever says, “Hey, people said this last year and it didn’t happen. Why should I believe you this time?”

  7. I vote for Tim Flannery, old bone collector, rabid warmists and one half of ‘Two Morons in a Tinny’ (small aluminum boat)
Don’t count on any votes from Perth, Australia it became a ghosttown 2 years ago when all the water ran out - according to Tim

  8. Thanks for all the nominations so far, it looks like the 1st Annual Alarming Alarmism Uttered by an Alarmist award will be a tough fight already.

  9. Nominations close tomorrow, if you haven’t yet added your favorite, get to it.

Voting will open Thursday, you can start while I write the weekly round-up.
