Why do it?
Since the dollar hit par, no major purchase in our household has been made in Ontario. Michigan and Upper New York State on the other hand have done well.
Look at some numbers. Michigan sales tax: 6%. Ontario PST: 8% plus GST 5% = 13%. Add to the tax advantage the fact that US prices are cheaper for most items. Oh, and I get to fill the tank at a 25% discount too. Even if I get charged duty on entering Canada (5%) I come out ahead on the price advantages alone.
Now Dalton McGuinty’s Liberals have given me yet another reason not to shop at home.
Nice work driving all that traffic to the border Dalton, I’m sure that our Southern neighbors thank you.
