After its humilation in the local council elections last Thursday, Gordon Brown’s Labour party fell to 3rd place in the EU elections when the results were released last night.
But that’s the only good news for Britons, who also elected two bona fide Nazis to the European parliament.
On the weekend when veterans and their fallen comrades were honored for their part in the Normandy landings, the news that the UK will be partly represented by ugly Nazi thugs is a blot on the nation’s reputation. It would be comfortable to explain it away as a protest vote, but there were other choices, like Green or UKIP if it were only about not voting Labour or Conservative. Something ugly is growing in the North of England.
It might have been a protest vote, but it was a protest too far.
Gordon Brown may be gone from the PM role by Friday, and his legacy may be that he was the only Prime Minister unpopular enough to make voting Nazi a viable option.
UPDATE: Lebanon, to its credit, voted the terrorists out.
I agree with the sentiment behind the protest vote, but I wish it had been directed to UKIP or, heaven forbid, the Greens.
The BNP really are an odious bunch of thugs and racists, perhaps the mainstream parties will pay attention now that the public has shown how low they rank in the vermin stakes.
I have no time for the BNP but when the political elite simply sticks its head in the sand as mass, unplanned, immigration radically changes the culture of England I can understand how the politics of anger will, inevitably, surface.
It would be more pleasant if those politics did not result in the election of nasty, racialist people; but that is what happens when mainstream political parties try to pretend that there is not a thing wrong with their policy - or lack of policy - on immigration, the economy and the very idea of England.
