Ontario offshore windfarms blown away

Dalton McGuinty ‘s Liberals have dropped a key element from green plans for the province’s energy - offshore wind farms:

After years of touting wind projects as a critical piece of the alternative energy puzzle, the government let slip — very quietly — that offshore wind projects are no longer part of the game plan. Turns out there just isn’t enough scientific evidence that offshore wind projects do a lick of good, said Brad Duguid, the energy minister.

The government is claiming it’s about the science of the projects, but in fact it’s about votes and the coming fall election. Ontarians are unhappy about higher rates for electricity and are coming to the realization that government subsidies at up to 20 times market rate for wind and solar are driving the cost increases.

Ontario no longer threatened by canoe shredders

Last week the axe fell on small solar projects, this week it’s offshore wind. Anyone who invested real money based on government’s promises of guaranteed riches should be nervous. One Strathroy-area farmer has an $85,000 solar panel in his backyard that the local utility can’t or won’t hook into the grid, leaving him out of pocket and out of luck. He’s one of many who forgot that a deal that looks too good to be true, probably is - even when it’s the government doing the selling.

Solar and wind subsidies are unsustainable and always were. As as soon as voters woke up to the billions being wasted on greenwashing, McGuinty changed tack, but he owns the green agenda and is the father of the Green Energy Act come October it may be his end. Let’s hope so.
